Kale Chips

Seasoned Kale in the dehydrator along with other veggies my mum is dehydrating.

Seasoned Kale in the dehydrator along with other veggies my mum is dehydrating.

Recently I found a fitness website called Blogilates. It is getting rather popular on youtube right now with many success stories, healthy recipes, etc posted on their website.

While browsing around the “recipes” section, I found this recipe for Kale Chips and Cassey (the owner and host of Blogilates) said that it tastes like Doritos! And it’s KALE! A super-food  I hear there’s heaps of benefits from eating kale – some a little unbelievable. But if you want you can do a quick search on google or read this.

I gave up eating deep friend around 5 years ago but I still gave in when it comes to potato chips and Doritos until about a year ago. If this recipe is a success, not only can I eat this healthy snack, but I can also share this with my family and promote a healthier diet. So I have high hopes!

Since my family and I were going to go travel for 2 weeks, we had to “clean out” our fridge – meaning buy nothing new and eat what’s there. We still had a bag of kale left and didn’t know what to do with them since that was our first time seeing and buying Kale. So I decided to make kale chips.

Dehydrate at 145 degrees Fahrenheit for a few hours…

I followed Cassey’s recipe except for the fact that we didn’t have any sunflower seeds nor cashews as suggested by the source recipe – we only had peanuts, so we used that instead. After dehydrating them for about 4 hours (we left it a little longer since we were out of the house for a couple of hours to do some last minute shopping for travel) they came out about half the size and super crispy! I think that’s what we’re going for?

The Finished Product

The taste? Um… a little weird… Mine didn’t turn out to taste like Doritos, possibly because we used peanuts. But hey, still edible and pretty yummy.

One thing I found weird in the recipe was that on Cassey’s blog, it says if I use the oven to bake it for 5 minutes, toss then bake for another 5 but on the source recipe that Cassey mentioned, it says to bake for 3-4 hours. What a huge difference! Let me know if any of you tried baking them.

I also had a really hard time trying to figure out what “Nutritional Yeast” was. There was so many warnings saying that it’s different from a brewers’ yeast. I almost used bakers yeast (which I did find very weird) since I thought this was the same thing. Luckily I searched around a bit more and found out that it is definitely not bakers yeast. I searched around some more and found out that there are a few alternative names to “Nutritional Yeast” – Savoury Yeast Flakes is what it’s called here in Australia. Unluckily, my local supermarket didn’t carry it. So I had to go on an adventure to go to a pharmacy (out of all places) at a suburb nearby and got a 200gr packet for AU$14.95 – which is like WHAAAA?? why you so expensive??? 😦

If you are in Perth, Western Australia and looking for nutritional yeast and you are not in a hurry, I definitely suggest to try order them online. I think I saw a 500gr packet for just under $20 and a 200gr packet for about $11. But I was in a hurry, so I bought mine at Pharmacy 777 in Cottesloe.

Anyway, I hope you like my little review of this recipe. It was definitely an adventure trying to find “Nutritional Yeast”. I hope it was useful know how I did mine and maybe (just maybe) inspire you to go eat healthier alternatives to over-processed foods.

Have you tried making Kale Chips? How was yours?

Visited after 10 years: Nazar Kebabs & Turkish Bakery

So I’ve lived in Australia for close to 10 years now and aside for the first few weeks, I’ve always lived in this suburb. There is a local Turkish kebab shop in the same complex as our local supermarket here and mum, little sis and I visited the shop last week (finally).

Turkish KebabIt’s amazing the stuff that you go past almost everyday and take for granted. I’m not much a foodie and I don’t know why I’m “reviewing” a food shop but my point is remember to look at what’s in front of you and be thankful for it.

Turkish Kebab-2I ordered a steak kebab with salad. The service was excellent – the people were nice. The food was yummy and the bread was unique – like nothing I’ve tasted on a kebab before – but yum!

As I grew up eating probably about 95% Asian food until I was 18, I need to have “tasty” food. As in, nothing bland. For example, I cannot eat plain noodle or plain rice though I’m fine with plain white bread for some reason. The taste of the kebab in this shop satisfied all three of us though and we will most likely come back.

They have great opening hours too! They don’t close till 9pm – great for those days when you forgot about time and didn’t prepare dinner until it was too late and everyone’s too hungry to cook.

My Order: Steak Kebab with Salad

My Order: Steak Kebab with Salad

I think I need to learn and practice more on how to eat kebabs because I made such a huge mess and ended up with a puddle of sauce along with pieces of steak (which I ate) on my plate 😦 But it was great that they gave us each a plate without us requesting it.

Have you had any similar experiences where you go past something so many times but never stop and enjoy it?

Do share with us below in the comments section!

P.S. sorry for the bad quality photos – only had my phone and it was super dark!

Way back to exercising (3): Fitness Evolved 2012 [X-Box 360 + Kinect]

For the past few weeks, I have been using the Fitness Evolved 2012 game on X-Box 360 + Kinect to exercise. I just would like to share with you my thoughts on this.

I started about a week into my beginner yoga program on the free phone app I mentioned in my previous Way Back to exercising post. The activities and workouts on this game is definitely interesting – especially they have yoga and dance “classes” too! 2 of my favourite form of exercise. For the first week or so, I felt muscle pain! The good kind! I used to get this back in my ballet days – every Sunday, without fail, since I had 5 hour classes every Saturday. I knew better not to stop exercising though and the games have definitely motivated me to come back and work out on it almost everyday since.

The game has 4 components: “My Zone”, “Activities”, “Workouts” and “Classes”. My Zone is where your profile, progress, goals, etc are and activities include things like warm-up games, a game simmilar to Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) minus the mat, a running game, skipping rope game, etc. The workouts section is more focused on body parts – like arms, glutes, legs, back, stomach, etc. Classes is what I spend most of my time with – here they have Yoga,

If you know me, you probably know I can not stand running and working out on my own on the machines. Even with a friend next to me, I still feel very bored… These kind of activities on this game does exist but I don’t mind them as much as they tell you what to do, how many reps to go and they set challenges – for example, 20 seconds of high knee running, etc. But I do still prefer doing stuff from their “classes” section. Dancing is more of my forte.

Though I feel a little silly doing this (and so I wouldn’t do this in front of anyone with the exception of family and maaaaybe a few close friends), I love the African Rythm and Bollywood the best! They are so different to any form of dancing I’ve done in the past (well, I did do a little tiny bit of Bollywood for college performances), they are fast paced, works the whole body and I just looooove dancing. The hip-hop however, I was a little disappointed with. The songs are slow and the movements I found to be a little weird – maybe it’s just not my style.

The calorie counter I feel is not at all accurate. I guess this is expected since they didn’t weigh me or even asked me how heavy I was, etc. So I don’t take the counter seriously – I just use it as a guide to measure how much I’ve done that day relative to other days playing it. Anyways, I’m not the type to count calories.

The great thing about this game is that it’s in the comfort of your own home. If you have enough room, you could even do it in your bedroom out of sight of anybody to save yourself some embarrassment (especially for a recently-came-back me). Plus, it’s nowhere as expensive as a gym membership! Especially, if you got this game on a discount. You can find one nowadays for about $40 or even less.

One of the biggest con to this game is that it requires quite a bit of space. I don’t live in a very big house so I do bump into things (or people) sometimes. It is also not protable (well, technically, you could bring the X-Box and Kinnect system with you wherever you go – but that’s such a hassle and waste of space/kilos).

Now it’s been about 2 or 3 weeks since I started. I just play about 4 days a week until the calorie counter says I’ve burnt 100+ calories, depending on how I feel and how much time I had that day. My soreness is gone, my knees and legs are a lot stronger and I feel healthier in general. I like to believe that the exercise is “enhanced” by the giggles me and my family get when I dance. I will definitely continue on using this game.

I know people who have laughed at me when I told them I work out using X-Box. They say I won’t be able to push myself, etc. But I found this to have worked for me better than going to the gym and working out on the machines. I simply found this game motivates me more. So don’t let people get to you! Definitely check this out – maybe try it out? If you have an X-Box, I know you can download a free demo version.

I saw Fitness Evolved 2013 for Wii-U at shops but I have yet to see the X-Box version. When that goes on sale (because I can not justify spending more than $70 on a piece of disc) I will surely try it out.

PS. none of the images in this post are my own nor do they belong to me.

Catching Fire [Teaser Trailer]

The trailer to the upcoming movie Catching Fire, sequel of Hunger Games.

I read all three books and watched Hunger Games. Can’t wait to watch the second movie!

Gloss [Perth] Haul: April 2013

If you didn’t know already, I’m a little bit of a nail polish addict. When there’s colour on my nails, I look at it and I feel happy. I especially feel so happy when I put nail art on them myself.

The Haul

Recently, it has come to my attention that there’s discount nail polish in the city (Perth city to be exact). This is thanks to Cindy from Rose Gold Whimsy. So we decided after our little trip to Harbour Town, we would continue our “outing” to the city for some lunch and to check out the discounted nail polishes Cindy mentioned – Gloss Accessories.

Voila! There were Revlon nail polishes, 3 for $12 and Sally Hansen nail polishes at 3 for $10.

I’ve been using Sally Hansen’s top coat and base coats for a while now (maybe 2 years?) and I love all the ones that I’ve tried. Sally Hansen’s colour polishes on the other hand, I haven’t really tried with the exception of one from their Xtreme Wear line in “Flirt”. With Revlon nail polishes, I bought some (more like a lot) a few months ago for just over $2 from an online discount store. So I decided to go for Sally Hansen.

Sally Hansen / Gloss Haul

I shared this deal with Cindy – I bought 2 and she bought 1. I got a Diamond Strength No Chip Nail Colour in number 30 “Lilac Chantilly” and a No Chip 10 day nail colour in white tip.

I also got this Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Speed Dry Drops which I have yet to try for about $6 which I think is a STEAL as they are normally around $10-$15 at drugstores.

I still don’t know how to use white nail polish properly – either that, or white polish is always streaky, or this one I got is really bad. But I love the Lilac Chantilly colour – which is a light purple colour, as suggested by the name and the picture.

Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Speed Dry Drops

The Insta-Dri Speed Dry Drops was interesting for me to open. It came with a lid and then the pipette is in a separate sealed plastic. I am excited to try this. In fact, I will try this right now. It does say in the bottle to “Apply base coat, nail colour and top coat. Wait for 60 seconds after applying top coat. Apply 1 or 2 drops to each nail.” I may be back with a review of this.

So that was all I got at Gloss. I’m not that into make-up so I didn’t even really look at the make-up there.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

Have you used the Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Speed Dry Drops before?

Harbour Town [Perth] Haul: April 2013

I admit I went a little crazy this past week and a half. I went shopping at Harbour Town Perth not once, not twice, THREE times. I was going to do a haul after my first trip but then I thought I would wait for my already planned 2nd trip with Cindy from Rose Gold Whimsy not too long after my first visit. After that, things got hectic and I was going to blog about this on Friday, but then my family decided to go to Harbour Town (again) last Saturday. So here I am on a Thursday afternoon trying to finally finalise and compile these hauls.

First, I would like to warn you that bargain is a recurring team. I don’t really spend anymore than $10 on a piece of clothing unless I really need it for something or if the item is REALLY that good and worth my money.

Coloured Jeans for $5 each – SES

On my first trip, I was on a hunt for long jeans. It’s particularly hard for me to find long jeans since the trend right now is to wear skinny jeans and I, unfortunately, am on the thicker-leg side of the *just made up* leg spectrum despite my petite height and upper body. I feel like I want to say about 90% of the time, skinny jeans don’t fit me even after going 1 size up. But on this trip, VOILA! $5 coloured jeans that actually fit me! I snatched every single colour they have on my size – though I admit they are not a perfect fit and I don’t normally wear coloured jeans. But hey! $5 Jeans! Time to start learning how to style them.

$1 Bow Belt – Factorie

I also snatched a TOTAL BARGAIN! This belt was marked to be $2 at Factorie. Already a bargain. Then when I went to the counter to pay, they said that all items with red tags were further discounted 50% off. So… I got this belt for $1. Unfortunately it was a size M/L but hey! you can always punch extra holes! I actually bought the puncher and I will haul that some other day in another blog post.

.

$4 Maxi Dress – SES

$5 Blue Top – SES

I then went with Cindy from Rose Gold Whimsy the 2nd time. And oh my, on that day, I was more of a shopaholic than Cindy despite the fact that she’s the one with a style blog. I was supposed to be hunting for work out clothes – Yoga pants to be exact. But in the end, I didn’t manage to find any cheap ones that is to my liking. (Work out clothes, why are you so expensive?) So my first purchase was at SES. I was trying on a dress that was cute but was a size too big for me – needless to say, that didn’t work out. But in the process, I saw a $4 Maxi Dress in the change rooms and while I was trying things on, I tried that on too! I loved it and it’s probably my favourite purchase that day! The fabric is really stretchy, light and super soft. Definitely worth $4 especially that you can wear a strapless maxi dress like that in many many ways!

Then, on the way out I saw a $5 simple light blue Top. So dangerous right? I thought this would make a great basic – pair with jean shorts, white shorts (not that I have/wear them), long jeans, skirts, so many things I can think of!

We also stopped by the sale at Lovisa and I got a $3 Rose Gold Bib Necklace and a $3 Blue Bib Necklace. Their rings were also on sale – 4 for $10. Cindy and I decided to share – I got 3 and she got 1. I am giving one away to my Aunty who is crazy about statement rings so I’ll just show you the two that I’m keeping.

$3 Rose Gold Bib Necklace – Lovisa

$3 Blue Bib Necklace – Lovisa

4 for $10 rings – Lovisa

The 3 rings stacked together – can be worn together or one by one.

The third visit, my family was there in search for supplies for my sister as she was going camping. She needed a plain shirt to iron her group’s design on and we found some shirts at Jay Jays which were 3 for $10. Since I have 2 sisters (so there’s 3 girls including me) we all picked one top each. This was my only purchase there and I’m quite happy with it!

3 for $10 White Singlet – Jay Jays

So the total from this haul was 3 pairs of jeans, 2 tops, 1 maxi dress, 1 belt, and 4 jewellery items. All adds up to about AU $41.83. Oh dear I need to stop shopping.

I hope you enjoyed that and do let me know what you think in the comments!

Have you taken advantage of amazing sales lately?

Lots of Smiles,

Sita

Happy Thought: @disneywords

Good morning from the land down under!

I’ve been following “Disney Words” or @disneywords for a while now on twitter. They post random quotes from Disney movies, books, etc. I love it! I love Disney, I love Quotes so what more can I ever want?

Although I am no longer a child or a teen, I am not ashamed to say that I love Disney and I will forever love Disney. The quotes they post makes me realise why Disney is so wonderful for all audiences. The little kids will get the light childish humor and the cute cartoon characters. The older audiences will realise that there’s so much more meaning to Disney movies than what we got from when we were kids. No wonder all the Disney classics are still being re-played here in Australia a good 50 years after their first release. They are just that good.

Disney Words on Twitter

Disney Words on Twitter

The feeling I get from reading quotes from @disneywords on my Android Twitter app is difficult to explain. Though I’ll tell you this, I always look forward to more quotes from them!

Here are a few of my favourite tweets:

So if you love Disney and you have a twitter account and you want to read Disney quotes, this Twitter is a must to follow.

What’s your favourite Disney quote?

Lots of Smiles,

Sita

P.S. I am not affiliated with Disney Words and gain nothing but pleasure from writing this post.

Way back to exercising (2): free “Daily Yoga” app

Welcome to another Sprinkle O’Rainbow post. Today I would like to share with you a free “Daily Yoga” app I used since about 3 weeks ago to kick start my “way back to exercise” mission.

If you missed my last post on health & fitness and if you want to know my history (injuries) and why I am on this mission then click here!

The app is literally called “Daily Yoga” and is available on both Android and Apple devices ranging from smartphones to tablets. I personally installed this on my Android Samsung S3 (smartphone) so I have it accessible at all times, wherever I am. That way I have no excuses not to at least do yoga once a day.

Daily Yoga

What you need to do to get this app is to download the main app: “Daily Yoga (All-In-One)“, and then you can download individual “plugins” which feeds into the plugin so in the end, all you need to open is the plugin app and you have all your modules accessible from there. The app also includes a few training programs so you can follow a schedule if you prefer that (they give you reminders on your phone to do the scheduled yoga session) though there’s only one free program which is the beginners program.

Home Screen of Daily Yoga App

The plugins (which most are free) vary from beginner to advanced and are titled very clearly so you can choose which part of your body you would like to work on for the day. There’s also sequence plugins like “Yoga Sequence for Beginners“, “Sun Salutation“, “Yoga for Weight Loss” and “Yoga for Body Toning” where it doesn’t concentrate only on particular bodyparts. If you get days like me where I feel like I can’t be bothered standing up or I feel like exercising so I’d prefer standing up, they also have plugins for that.

Personally, I downloaded all the free plugins – because I’m a horder like that. Jokes. But really, it’s because I want to have the choice there depending on my mood that day but at the same time I don’t want to spend money.

The concept of using this app is very simple. Just spend 10-15 minutes of your day to do Yoga. No excuses right? everyone has a 15minute break in their day? Also doing these really wakes me up in the calmest but fastest way in the morning. So I like to do it just after I wake up in the morning next to my bed. Now I really have no excuse not to do it.

Though I am not really a beginner in Yoga, I started by doing the beginner program which went for 2 weeks. There is one session everyday with a 2 day break in the middle. I thought this would be a good light start to ease myself back into exercising. I loved it! About half of the sessions went for 10 minutes and the other half went for 15 minutes each. It wakes me up, loosens me up and gets my body moving in the morning. Oh and a tip – you can change the scheduled times for your sessions in the program to match your desired schedule.

This is definitely not enough of  an exercise but in my opinion, it’s a great start nonetheless. Plus, it’s FREE!
